Borussia Dortmund, commonly known as Dortmund or BVB (Ballspielverein Borussia), is a German professional football club based in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia. The club was founded on 19 December 1909 and has a long history in German and European football.

Borussia Dortmund is one of the most successful and popular football clubs in Germany. They have a passionate and dedicated fan base, which creates a frenetic atmosphere at their home ground, Signal Iduna Park, one of the biggest stadiums in Europe.

Dortmund's early years were spent competing in regional leagues before being promoted to higher ranks. They achieved their first major success in the 1956-57 season when they won their first DFB-Pokal (German Cup) title.

The club's most successful periods were in the 1990s and early 2000s. Under the leadership of Ottmar Hitzfeld and with star players such as Matthias Sammer, Andreas Möller and Karl-Heinz Riedle, Dortmund won the title. consecutive Bundesliga titles in the 1994-1995 and 1995-96 seasons. They also won the UEFA Champions League title in the 1996-97 season, defeating Juventus in the final.

In the early 2000s, Dortmund continued to be a dominant force in German football, regularly competing for the Bundesliga title. They won another Bundesliga title in the 2001–02 season, with three league titles in eight years.

In recent years, Borussia Dortmund has always maintained its place among the top German clubs. They have developed a reputation for nurturing young talent through their youth academy and are known for their attacking play.

Dortmund also regularly participates in European tournaments. They have reached the finals of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League in recent years, narrowly missing out on those titles.
