Bayer 04 Leverkusen, commonly known as Bayer Leverkusen or simply Leverkusen, is a German professional football club based in Leverkusen, North Rhine-Westphalia. The club was founded on 1 July 1904 and has a long history in German football.

Leverkusen competed in regional leagues for the first time before being promoted to higher ranks. The club entered the Bundesliga, Germany's top football league, for the first time, in the 1979–80 season. Since then, Leverkusen has been a mainstay in the Bundesliga, constantly playing at the highest level. Over the years, Bayer Leverkusen has enjoyed considerable success, both at the domestic and European levels. The club has always been one of the top contenders in the Bundesliga, finishing second several times.
